2018 Grand Floral Parade

Chinese Community Rose Festival Entry – June 9, 2018

The Chinese Community is very pleased we were successful in implementing our very ambitious plan to enter a dynamic and cultural rich entry in the 2018 Portland Rose Festival Grand Floral Parade.   This entry represented major Chinese community undertaking with involvements and support from multiple Chinese organizations as well as community members across Metro Portland and the State of Oregon.   Please read complete background information or the 2018 sponsors, organizers and supporters about entry detail descriptions, organizers, sponsors and supporters, etc.

This entry included three segments:

  • A 50-foot dragon, gift from the City of Suzhou to the City of Portland to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of excellent sister city relations, danced by the Portland Lee’s Associations Dragon & Lion Dance Team and community volunteers.

  • A beautiful floral float showcasing Portland landmarks – Chinatown Gate and Lan Su Chinese Garden,  with exquisite Chinese opera artist; and beautiful China Peony Princess and China Peony Queen, presented by Oceana Blue Productions.

  • A freshly designed Chinese dance performed by dancers from the Chinese Friendship Association of Portland Fitness Team and the Portland Chinese Dance Troupe.

We are very proud that Chinese Community entry received the 2018 Rose Festival Directors’ Award for Best Depiction of volunteerism.  Our Chinatown Gate feature on the float is so realistic looking that we were seeing double visions of two Chinatown Gates.

We appreciated to have this opportunity to work together and produce an excellent entry to showcase the best Chinese arts, culture and architecture in the region.  This event was organized by the Northwest Chinese Alliance and directed by an Organizing Committee with the following members:

  • Cathy Chinn, Committee Chair – President, Northwest Chinese Alliance
  • Terry Chung – Board Member & Past President, Portland Chinatown History Foundation
  • Lisa James – Executive Director, Lan Su Chinese Garden
  • Neil Lee – Vice President, Oregon CCBA; President, Lee Association
  • Terry Lee – Director, Lee Association Lion Dance Team
  • Shibin Li – President, Chinese Friendship Association of Portland
  • Kitson Yu – President, Portland Bing Kong Tong
  • Michael Zhang – Vice President, Northwest Chinese Alliance

This truly was a major undertaking providing a very special opportunity for the Chinese Community to come together to place another floral float, after a very long absence, in the Portland Rose Parade to showcase our community spirits and honoring our culture, history, heritage and contributions to our Region.  Our 2018 float ridders included leaders from the Northwest Chinese Alliance and partner organizations; and representatives from our major sponsors.  We recognize them for their contributions of making this 2018 Chinese Community of Greater Portland floral float and entire entry possible.

2018 Grand Floral Parade Community Floral Float Ridders

We were honored by a backstage visit with our two dance teams by the Honorable Consul General and Mrs. Luo Linquan of the People’s Republic of China in San Francisco.  The Consul General was visiting Portland and Oregon and watched the Grand Floral Parade in the Memorial Coliseum.

To show even more community spirits, we also had our very own Chinese community member and Royal Rosarian, Chi Wu, assigned to be our Marshal to support our entry during the Grand Floral Parade.

We welcome your ongoing support for sponsorship, donations, or attendance of our Celebration Dinner to help finish our fundraising efforts for our entry.

Thank you so much!
